The hologram, as it is often represented in science-fiction film has become ubiquitous and familiar, a shorthand for the futuristic and the intangible. The project explores how the theatrical qualities of the contemporary hologram might be overlaid onto a physical structure to create a new kind of inhabitable and tectonic holographic experience. Located on an isolated Battery in Tokyo Bay, the Theatre sits dormant, periodically exploding into life when the holograms are activated. Through the synthesis of the projected and physical, this new typology challenges our experience of the virtual and is seen as a fabric that can shroud and conceal, but also reveal a visceral ‘brighter real’.
